OBJECTIVE: Create a timeline of typographic styles and technology through history, with accordion folded pages and hard covers, that can be viewed like a book or folded out into a full timeline.

STRATEGY: In this project, there were a few immediate choices I faced in relation to layout and practicality. When considering whether to lay my pages horizontally or vertically, I thought that the material made the most logical sense when laid out on pages with a horizontal orientation. This worked well for me, as I could capture the most length for my timeline while reserving enough space above the timeline for descriptions of each era and below this timeline for the information on the specific typographic technologies. I also had to decide how many times to accordion fold each page of my timeline. After making multiple prototypes and seeing how the text set in each, I decided to fold each tabloid-sized piece of paper 4 times. Another design choice I made was including no color – only black and white. I did this in order to not take away from the material in any way. As my design includes lots of lines and compacted text, I wanted to keep the remaining design elements, such as color and font, simple and far from frivolous. The hairlines attached to each technology may be followed in order to see where they fall in a to-scale chronological order.
